Counter-intelligence high on the agenda at ONS 2024

During this year's ONS, security in the North Sea, industrial espionage, and the vulnerability of energy systems will be high on the agenda across multiple arenas.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, uncertainty surrounding Norwegian interests and Europe's energy supply has increased significantly. Consequently, Norway has become an even more crucial energy supplier to the rest of Europe, making the vulnerability of our value chain and infrastructure critical.

The Norwegian Intelligence Service, in its unclassified assessment of current security challenges for 2024, notes that the relationship between Russia and the West will only become more unpredictable in the future, and the risk of misunderstandings, accidents, and escalation is continuously increasing.

Inger Lise Rettedal, Programme Director
Energy security was a prominent topic at ONS in 2022 when Russia commenced its warfare against Ukraine. Unfortunately, it remains just as relevant today, two years later. We look forward to hearing the discussions on intelligence and energy security at this year's ONS and greatly appreciate that the Intelligence Service and the Intelligence School will join us to share their perspectives and analyses with us and the broader energy industry, says programme director Inger Lise Rettedal at ONS.

So how does one actually protect 9,000 kilometres of pipelines on the Norwegian continental shelf, and what does this mean for our transition and climate goals? We are more vulnerable in Norway than ever to sabotage, and this will be discussed by the head of the Intelligence Service, Nils Andreas Stensønes, at ONS Centre Court on Monday, 26 August during ONS.

Atle Tangen, Section Leader, Politiets sikkerhetstjeneste (PST) will be speaking at ONS Young in a session about digital security and energy security with Daniel Christensen, Pen-Tester, Telenor Norge, Gry Evita Sivertsen, Founder & COO, Griteria Security, moderated by Sara Christine Bach Øvrebø, Senior Supply Chain Management Consultant, Equinor. ONS Young is the arena for pupils, students, and young professionals. Tangen's session is on Tuesday 27 August at Stage 1 - Speaker's Corner. PST will also host a side event at ONS, and a meet-and-greet at ONS+ in downtown Stavanger.

Energy security will also be a topic at ONS Conference, where top executives, politicians, and global thinkers gather to discuss geopolitics, climate, and energy. Prime Minister Støre, Foreign Minister Barth Eide, CEOs of TotalEnergies and Equinor, NATO, and the IEA are among the speakers here.
